- Abstract
- The crude death rate is the number of deaths occurring in the population of a given geographical area during a given year, per 1,000 mid-year total population of the given geographical area during the same year.
The crude death rate (together with the crude birth rate) is the key component to understand the values and trends of natural change (see the relative map)For the Alpine territory in general, the crude death rate is strictly connected with phenomena such as ageing population, with higher values of this indicator where the population is older. Therefore, despite the complex picture, which presents a high variability, a higher crude death rate can be observed in those Alpine areas with a high incidence of the older shares of the population (for example, the more rural Alpine areas in Italy and Austria).
The presence of foreign population with its young age structure, however, could be one of the factors that reduce the value of the indicator for territories where it is mainly present.
